Japanese cultural studies presentation
I will be doing a short presentation on some of the cultural references in the Miyazaki films. Although I'll choose a few for the presentation, it would be nice to have some scenes selected or questions posed by my fellow students. If you have any suggestions, please post them here. Thanks!
Nick, could you talk a little about the different cultural groups in Japan? Ken Wilkening suggested to me that in Princess Mononoke, there seems to be some allegorical references to indigenous Japanese (northern?) cultural groups in conflict with more industrialized groups.
ReplyDeleteThere are definitely indigenous people (Ainu) in Japan, much like there are in North America, New Zealand, etc. Indeed, a Japanese initiative in the 1800s to populate the island of Hokkaido and suppress the native people was launched. I will try my best to address this. I'm no expert, but I have learned about them, and I talked a bit with Japanese people on their treatment.
